Roots

When and who spoke for the first time about women and tourism and who are the stakeholders? You can find here some basic documents, and all the experts in the Resources following section.

UNWTO ( World Tourism Organization )
For UNWomen-UNWTO dedicates studies in gender equality as it is an essential component in the development of tourism. In 2007, UNWTO
introduced a section on gender. Recently, the Ethics-Gender of the UNWTO published a report on the situation of women in tourism. They are creating a program of gender empowerment and are in the process of putting together a Web Portal on this theme.

AITR ( Italian Association of Responsible Tourism )
In conjunction with the initiatives of the UNWTO, the AITR has started a Gender Table. In 2007, the Table sent documents to the UNWTO in occasion of the ‘Tourism Day 2007’ and launched a series of initiatives (see below under Identifying Documents). In 2008, AITR started a Focus Group dedicated to this subject matter, with the intention of creating a point of reference for the exchange of ideas and projects, promote and inform others in the tourism sector, sustainable for the territory and a lever for the development of employment for women.
