As refined as oil

Where: Montalbano di Fasano (Brindisi)

Who: Masseria Mozzone

At the Masseria Mozzone women create beauty products and cooking recipes

In a farm of the '700, the oil is used to make beauty creams, while the activities in the territory are multiplied. From his experience, some tips for those who want to open a b+b in the countryside. More information for travellers in Puglia.

Little but good could be the motto of an example to imitate, so simple that it is the maximum of good taste. The idea is by Floriana Fanizza, who put her degree and doctorate in economics in the drawer, to devote herself to the family farm. And so, while her brother is in charge of the campaign up to the bottling of the oil, she added an extra touch, so much so that she received the "Earth Goddess" award promoted by the National Observatory for Female Entrepreneurship in Agriculture and the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.

What rules do you know?
In Puglia as in all of Italy, to open a bed and breakfast you need to restructure according to the law and then communicate to the Municipality prices, opening, health regulations. Our company has chosen not to become an Agriturismo, nor to do Rural Tourism, the two methods that define companies that have restaurants or that organize routes in the area. We have done it ourselves, we have started the direct sale and the activity of bed & breakfast making use of the Law of Orientation' and multifunctionality in agriculture. But now regional calls for proposals with the Rural Development Plan (RDP) are about to come out, so projects can be submitted for funding.

What happens on the ground?
We have a Coldiretti Donne e Giovani network with which we are designing educational masserie, involving schools and the province of Brindisi with workshops of taste, wool and more. And we organized a Women in Agriculture Course, with the Chamber of Commerce, so we give lessons on business culture, multifunctionality, educational farms, processing of horticultural and dairy products, standards.

Is there any cooperation?
In our zone b+b, farmhouses, restaurants are connected with each other with a given internal base that we use to send us customers.

How was the Masseria born?
We carried out a "sustainable renovation" with little money, in what was once a shelter for animals. Without plaster, lime, every year we give a whitening. Inside there are very few furniture. We did everything in whitewashed tuff: the cabinets with a wooden and iron rod and wooden hangers buanco with bags of cloth. And then recovered niches, restored old doors, repainted tables.

What services do you offer?
We organize tastings or evenings of pizzica, but we do not directly tourist trails or catering, which are managed by local experts.

The extra idea?
I personally took care to study our oil and create wellness products: olive oil has become an ingredient of shower shampoo, face and body creams, tried and tested for a long time before arriving in the guest rooms of the farm.
